You won't find any shortage of adventures when signing up for Ecuador tours. Within the span of a week, you can kayak through Amazon rainforest, mountain bike among volcanoes in the Andes, soak up the sun on sandy beaches, and cruise the Galapagos. But we don't recommend this itinerary – Ecuador is such a beautiful country that you'll want to spend much more time enjoying this beautiful adventure destination.
Ecuador Guided Tours
The most popular Ecuador guided tours are in the Galapagos, a unique island chain known for its biological diversity. There are, however, so many more adventure tours in Ecuador for you to explore. Ecuador has several other nature reserves in both lowland jungles and mountainous volcanic environments. Other national parks, like Cotopaxi, are rich in scenery and wildlife and well worth your consideration.
Tour guides in Ecuador are some of the best in the business. They are extremely proud of the beauty and diversity that their country offers to visitors. They can put together a custom experience for you or arrange a pre-planned guided tour. You’ll have options for everything from a luxury private tour, guided family tour, or a budget group tour.
Ecuador’s Trekking Tours
Ecuador's trekking tours will take you through jungles, ancient cities, along beaches, and over volcanoes. These tours are suitable for all ages and ability levels and last anywhere from just a few days to a couple of weeks. Trekking tours can be guided or self-guided, and include transportation options like jeeps, kayaks, horseback, and on foot.
One of the more popular trekking tours in Ecuador is in the Andes, where you can view the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi, within the national park of the same name. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as llamas, wolves, pumas, and condors. Wild horses roam the barren landscape in an otherworldly experience.
In addition to the mighty Andes, you can also sign up for a trekking tour of the Amazon rainforest. These tours will take you through cloud forests, traditional native villages, and haciendas. Staying in an eco-lodge during your trek will give you some additional comforts while feeling as if you’re living in the jungle.
Ecuador’s Cycling Tours
Cycling enthusiasts won’t want to miss any of Ecuador’s cycling tours. Like the trekking tours, cycling tours in Ecuador are suited for everyone. Options include road biking and mountain biking, and e-bike tours are also becoming increasingly available in Ecuador.
There are many different flavors of cycling tours in Ecuador. If you want a more relaxed journey, immersing yourself in the culture, you'll want to take a road cycling tour through Ecuador's beautiful mountain and coastal villages. Explore old churches, stay at beautiful lodges and bed-and-breakfasts, and enjoy Ecuador's fine cuisine. Many of these cycling tours include visits to Ecuador's talented artisans like weavers, potters, and woodworkers.
The more adventurous will likely want to hit the dirt trails on a mountain biking tour of Ecuador. These tours come in various lengths and difficulty levels. These thrilling trails span both volcanic landscapes and the Amazon rainforest. A real treat is to bomb downhill towards the end of your mountain biking tour and end up on one of Ecuador's pristine beaches.
Many tourists participating in Galapagos tours forget that they're in Ecuador. This Pacific island chain nearly 900 miles west of Ecuador is completely different from the rest of the country. A few islands are inhabited with small villages that act as a start or endpoint for Galapagos cruise tours. But the majority of islands are uninhabited and completely unique from one island to the next. You may see sharks and sea lions at one island and then penguins on the next, all juxtaposed against the backdrop of an imposing volcano.
There are no self-guided tours in the Galapagos. Because of the sensitive nature of this natural wonder, all visitors to the Galapagos must be accompanied by a licensed tour guide. These tour guides, however, are also naturalists with a wealth of valuable information that will make your trip complete. Most Galapagos tours are on cruise ships, which range from small luxury ships carrying a dozen passengers to larger tour ships with over a hundred passengers. Tours include swimming and hiking on these desolate islands.
Although small, the scenery in Ecuador is remarkably diverse. The Andes range, which spans the length of South America, is as little as 20 miles from the beach in some areas. This sharp rising terrain allows tourists a broad choice of activities within a short geographic span. Mysterious jungle mountains shrouded in clouds are just a stone’s throw away from endless lava fields. Including the Galapagos, this small country contains 27 potentially active volcanoes, some of which reach up to 20,000 feet above sea level.
The eastern border of Ecuador is landlocked except for the Rio Napo, which eventually feeds into the Amazon River. Nearly the entire eastern half of the country is rainforest, much of which is in protected reserves and parks, popular adventure tour destinations.
Ecuador is also home to beautiful cultural attractions. This is a part of Ecuador's scenery and what makes it so unique. Small mountain villages are home to brightly-colored houses on the hillsides, while larger cities like Quito are characterized by colonial architecture and towering cathedrals. Venturing into the dense canopy of the Amazon, you'll find completely different villages with homes on stilts and covered with thatch roofing.
